Description
A beautifully restored and exceptionally well-presented example of Porsche's iconic early 911S, this 1968 Porsche 911S combines matching-numbers authenticity, documented factory specifications, and an extensive, specialist-led restoration. Finished in its original Polo Red over a beautifully appointed Black Leatherette interior with Pepita cloth inserts, this remarkable sports car retains the character and engineering excellence that established the 911S as one of the most desirable early Porsche models. Showing approximately 50,266 miles, original engine, factory colors, and equipment. Completed on August 28, 1967, and sold as a 1968 model, the car was originally delivered in Germany before making its way to the United States early in its life.
Full Details
The exterior is finished in its factory-original Polo Red, showcasing the unmistakable silhouette and elegant proportions of the early Porsche 911. During its comprehensive restoration at 911 Design, the car was carefully disassembled and stripped to bare metal before receiving a meticulous body and paint restoration.
The high-gloss finish presents beautifully throughout, including the door jambs and inner body surfaces. Excellent panel alignment, consistent gaps, and properly fitted body components reflect the attention given to the restoration. All glass was removed, new weatherstripping installed, and the chrome trim removed and replated.
Additional exterior highlights include beautifully presented original-style Fuchs alloy wheels with Porsche-crest center caps, excellent chrome bumpers and trim, clean lighting assemblies, and properly finished exterior details. The factory-style Dunlop tire specification is documented in the original equipment records.
The interior has been beautifully restored using new-old-stock (NOS) black Leatherette with Pepita cloth inserts, matching the original factory configuration documented in the Porsche records.
The cabin features carefully finished door panels, dashboard, rear seating, and trim, complemented by the correct early black-rim steering wheel, classic instrumentation, and original-style switches and controls. A period-correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, documented as original equipment, completes the vintage Porsche atmosphere.
The original optional Webasto heating system has been reconnected and restored. For added comfort, the car is also equipped with a thoughtfully integrated Kuehl/Griffiths air-conditioning system, providing modern convenience while maintaining an authentic appearance. The air-conditioning system operates effectively, delivering cold air without significantly affecting engine response.
Power comes from the original, matching-numbers 2.0-liter air-cooled flat-six engine, bearing engine number 4180018. The engine has undergone a comprehensive rebuild, with careful attention to mechanical performance and correct factory-style presentation.
The engine compartment reflects the quality of the restoration, featuring the correct air intake box, Weber carburetors, appropriate fittings, original-style components, and properly finished hardware. The result is a clean and cohesive presentation worthy of this iconic Porsche.
Originally equipped with the optional Sportomatic transmission, the car has been converted to a Porsche 5-speed manual transmission, numbered 7090120. This conversion provides a more traditional, engaging driving experience, allowing the driver to fully appreciate the responsive character of the early 911S.
On the road, the engine starts promptly, idles smoothly, and delivers crisp throttle response with a distinctive air-cooled Porsche exhaust note. Acceleration is strong and consistent, with smooth power delivery throughout the rev range. The 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly in both cold and warm operating conditions, while the braking system delivers confident, straight-line stopping performance.
The restoration process began in January 2018, with initial mechanical work including carburetor gasket replacement, new oil and brake lines, heater system servicing, and clutch replacement. The car subsequently underwent an extensive restoration at 911 Design, where it was carefully disassembled and addressed by specialists in bodywork, paint, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, and interior restoration
Major restoration highlights include:
The undercarriage presents cleanly, with solid metal floor stampings, properly finished suspension components, ventilated disc brakes, gold-tinted calipers, and a correctly presented exhaust system. The front luggage compartment features the correct Fuchs spare wheel, matching Vredestein Sport Classic tire, original-style finishes, chassis identification details, and the correct heater shroud for the optional Webasto system.
The car has reportedly accumulated primarily test miles since the completion of its restoration, preserving its exceptional presentation.
